FAQs about Sports Psychology
Sport and exercise Psychology is the study of how thoughts, emotions and behaviours influence participation, performance, and well-being in sport and physical activity. Sport and exercise psychology also examines the ways in which physical activity affects mental health and personal development.
By understanding the connection between the mind and body, Sport and Exercise Psychology can improve motivation, confidence, and focus, while also promoting long-term well-being and enjoyment in physical and performance activities.
In Australia, all practising psychologists must complete a rigorous six-year training pathway to become generally registered with the Psychology Board of Australia through AHPRA. A General Psychologist can assess, formulate and provide evidence-based psychological support across a broad range of presentations.
A Sport and Exercise Psychologist has the same foundational registration but has completed an approved postgraduate program in sport and exercise psychology and a PsyBA-approved supervised practice program to achieve an Area of Practice Endorsement in Sport & Exercise Psychology. This endorsement recognises advanced competencies in applying psychological science to sport, exercise and performance contexts. Elly is currently completing her endorsement training required to become an AHPRA-endorsed Sport & Exercise Psychologist.
